There is a lot more variety and cool minor effects sprinkled over the game when compared to KM and that is just more fun. WotR has a lot more reactivity to your race, class and choices when compared to Kingmaker and that is pretty fun. The visuals in WotR are definetly a step above KM, i doubt anyone would deny it.

I tried a run with mercs and found it a bit booring. They have literally zero personality except what you can imagine. The mercs never comment on choices or chat at camp and are not interested in a romance. I think the main difference is that the Animal Domain Animal would be 4 levels weaker than the standard animal companion without Companion Boon (I think that is the feat name) that races the AC +4 lvls. #2. Other than that, yes, you could just go with mercs if you want specific classes. Beginner (less then 100 hrs): companions, cause they are fun! Advanced (300+ houurs): mercenaries, ofc, companions are suboptimal! Experienced (1000 hr or more): companions, cause they are fun!
